Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Open Training Institute no longer taking enrolments?

Open Training Institute was not able to generate sufficient interest from potential students to continue doing what it set out to achieve in 2013.

Our aim has always been to provide high-quality courses, the best in training and excellent support, all while keeping fees reasonable. To continue, we would have to have made substantial compromises, either to quality or to price – we were not prepared to do that.

When will Open Training Institute be closing?

Open Training Institute will not be taking new enrolments from March 1 this year. We will continue to provide the same level of training and support to all our existing students until the end of their contracted enrolment.

We believe in putting our students first, and this will not change despite not taking on new enrolments. Every student that wants to complete their course within their contracted time frame (between 12 months and two years) will have the time and opportunity to do so.

What does this mean for students now studying with Open Training Institute?

If you are an existing student, nothing changes.

You will continue to receive the same level of training and support as you are used to. Our trainers and support staff will be on hand over the remaining period of your enrolment to make sure you have the best chance of completing your qualification. If you would like to complete your studies more quickly, you can. If you want to pace yourself, you can do that too. That’s the beauty of our At Your Own Pace mode of study.

Will Open Training Institute’s level of service fall away?

Open Training Institute has not made the decision to stop taking enrolments and cease operations lightly. We are very aware of the need to minimise disruption to students enrolled with us. In fact, that’s our main objective up until our closure.

We have prided ourselves on providing high-quality content, outstanding trainers and strong student support services over the last several years. When it came time to make a decision on our future we had two clear options: one was to drastically reduce our level of support and increase our fees to keep operating. We knew this would lead to a significantly worse student experience. The other was to cease operating.

We decided that we couldn’t justify completely changing our philosophy to stay afloat. We will ensure that all students who wish to complete their studies during their contracted period have every opportunity to do so and with the same level of support we have always offered.

I’m currently behind where I want to be in my studies and am concerned I won’t be able to catch up. How can you help?

Our student support team can help you to devise a personalised study plan to assist you to meet your goals. Our trainers will give you every encouragement – and a strategy – to get back on track.

If you decide that you cannot complete the course in time, don’t forget that you can obtain a refund for modules that have not yet been opened (in line with our refund policy).

What happens if I don’t complete my qualification before the end of my contracted period ?

Depending on when you enrolled, you will have between 12 and 24 months to complete your studies. If you reach the end of your contracted period and are unable to complete your qualification, you are entitled to receive a Statement of Attainment for any units you successfully completed during that time. You can take this to any provider that offers the equivalent course as evidence of your progress and prior learning.

Will my qualification be recognised if Open Training Institute no longer exists?

All qualifications awarded by (or units successfully completed at) Open Training Institute are nationally recognised. Open Training Institute courses continue to meet all the requirements set out by the government and will be recognised by employers and other registered training organisations.

Can I get money back for units I wasn’t able to complete?

In line with our refund policy, you are not entitled to a refund even if you haven’t completed the unit.

You are eligible for a refund for any modules that have not been made available to you. For students on 24-month enrolments, modules are made available every 6 months or on completion of the previous module, whichever is sooner. (If you are in a 12-month course, modules are opened every 3 months.)

I only just enrolled (in early 2016). What does this mean for me?

There is no change to our policy. You have 12 months to complete your qualification. If you feel that this time frame may be difficult for you, please give us a call on 13 87 75 to discuss options that will help you to complete your qualification within the assigned period.

I’m not sure I want to continue if you are going to be closing. What can I do?

Don’t forget that our trainers will be available as they always have been. We will not be reducing our level of service during this time and you will continue to have access to student coaches and admin support.

If you would, however, like to withdraw before your next module becomes available, contact us on 13 87 75 or email: and we can refund your fees for any modules that have not yet been made available to you.

I’ve been speaking with your advisors and was just about to sign up. Can you still enrol me?

Unfortunately, we are no longer taking enrolments and this includes from students who have previously been in contact with us. If you have been considering university-level study, we can put you in contact with Open Universities Australia staff to determine if there’s an online degree through a leading Australian university that might suit your needs.

Does the closure of Open Training Institute have any implications for Open Universities Australia?

Open Universities Australia is not impacted by this decision at all.

Open Universities Australia has been providing access to online qualifications for more than 20 years and is the largest provider of its kind in the country, helping students gain access to courses offered by some of Australia’s leading universities.

Closure of Open Training Institute will allow Open Universities Australia to further focus on higher education.

I recently received communication about my qualification being transferred to a new qualification. Is this still happening?

Yes. All students that enrolled in courses with the identification code of BSB***07, or BSB***12 must be transferred to the equivalent or updated BSB***15 course before the end of March. As per communications sent previously, you need to finish units before March 11 or you will lose any work you have started on non-complete units. Any students that don't contact Open Training by March 11th will be automatically transferred by OTI. At that time, you'll not gain credit for any units which you're part way through and you'll also lose any assessments in progress so please ensure you keep copies of all your assessment pieces.  . If you would like further information, please call us on 13 87 75 and ask about "transfer to an updated qualification".

I have almost finished my course but my contracted enrolment period is about to expire. Can I still pay $100 for a three month extension?

Yes. At present, you are entitled to one three month extension if you pay $100. We want to do everything we can to help you to complete your course, however we are concerned about you paying this fee if you have not completed much of your course. Our courses are designed to be completed over 6 to 12 months, so if you have not made much progress at the end of your enrolment, we recommend that you seriously consider whether you will be able to complete the remainder of course in three months. If you would like more information, please contact us on 13 87 75 or on

I have more questions. Is there anyone I can talk to?

Absolutely. Our student admin team are happy to answer any questions they can, particularly around your study options, fees and completing your studies.

In addition, our student coaching team are on hand, as always, to help you with organising your time. They can provide you with personalised study plans to help you to accelerate the completion of your qualification. Our trainers will continue to be available, as well, to assist you with your studies.

If you would like further help or counselling, call 13 87 75 or email or for more information.
